Republic project for a modified
P-47;
In 1944, Republic Aviation
began working on a turbojet-powered replacement for the P-47
Thunderbolt piston-engined fighter.
At
first the new fighter was a redesign P-47.
The I-40
engine, closely based on Whittle's jet,
was about
to be avaible in early 1944,
but it had
a too large centrifugal compressor to fit in P-47 fuselage.
So a
study was done to accomodate the axial compressor J-35
engine, its your present kit.
On
September 1944, the Air Forces released new requirements and the
evolution of the P-47 was give up, as it was time then for a brand new
design,
wich will
become the XP-84.
