SOAR I'S ATLAS ED CENTAUR B BOOSTER article
Bell / US Air Force manned skip-glide
space bomber project of the 1955. Successor to Eugen Saenger antipodal
bomber. Predecessor to Brass Bell, and to Dynasoar.
This model is a 1/72 Scale repliqua
of a desk top model probably dated 1955 or 1956. Projects are known with
one or three boosters, all of them using liquid propellant. In this last
case, the three boosters show same length and diameter but differents nozzles
sizes. Late in the programm a small stage (transtage) was added to the
aft of the glider for an orbital version.
Model booster bodies are made from
Altuglas/plexiglas tube, diameter size 38x42mm (int/ext) corresponding
to a 120' diameter booster scaled to 1/72. I found only a very few of these
tubes, so a maximum of 3 models with the complete tripple booster will
be available. Still due to the lack of tubes, 9 single booster version
model will be available. It was a unique occasion to have such tubes, they
were produced from a special fabrication and I bet you can look for everywhere,
you wont find some.
The glider will be available in the
usual quantity -20 to 50 copies- , with "A" bomb and transtage.
The glider will be presentable erected on the transtage as a base, or in
landing configuration (then without transtage) if you want to realize a
landing gear from your own; 1/72 drawings are provide in the model sheet
for this purpose. Various extra parts may be added in the box, such as
pilot(standing), base, etc.
